Clinical validation studies of weighted eye masks

It was confirmed that when using a weighted eye mask, the proportion of non-REM sleep was higher for more periods than under other conditions. This shows that wearing a weighted eye mask significantly improves the depth of sleep (non-REM sleep) and the level of relaxation, and this improvement is sustained throughout the sleep.

■ Research content

The subjects were fitted with an electroencephalogram (EEG) device, and their brain waves were measured during naps on different days in the following order: (1) no eye mask, (2) a regular eye mask, and (3) a weighted eye mask.

■ From Professor Yasutoshi Yamauchi, Good Sleep Consortium, Yamagata University

"The difference in sleep depth when using a weighted eye mask was more pronounced than expected. Compared to other eye masks, we found that weighted eye masks have a stronger correlation with sleep depth," he commented.

■ About the Good Sleep Consortium

The Good Sleep Consortium is part of a program led by the Sleep Management Research Center at Yamagata University. It was established to accumulate sleep-related research and data that has been conducted in a scattered manner until now, with the aim of establishing a comfortable sleeping environment and sleep management system.

Research objective : "Providing efficient sleep to modern people who are sleep-deprived"
In recent years, the impact of COVID-19 has led to an increase in work from home and online classes, increasing the amount of time people are exposed to blue light from bright LED lighting and computers, raising concerns about its adverse effects on sleep. In addition, in order to implement solutions that suit a wide variety of life stages in society, we will address various sleep-related issues from an academic perspective, with members including companies, universities, and organizations that are concerned about sleep issues.
